A government attorney turned entrepreneur making cakes for a living? *Crickets*.
GT is big on taking leaps of faith. Not because I love having butterflies in the pit of my stomach; but because they continually inspire me to action in spite of what I think I don’t have. Meet Warren Brown.
Warren Brown challenged himself to bake for a 1999 New Year’s Eve resolution. At the time he was a practicing attorney for the Federal Government working in health care reform and didn’t know the first think about cake flour. Pure Apples and Oranges. In his beautifully published recipe book “Cake Love” Warren writes:
“I didn’t recognize the disconnect between my daily conscious self and the voice of discontent in my head. I acted happy but I was really torn. The conflict seemed normal. I just figured I’d deal with it like everyone else who was moping about in their late twenties: bury it, ignore it…”
Speak Warren. Living truth is Iconic.

Stories such as Warren Brown’s give me great inspiration because as he mentioned, it is easy to ignore one’s discontent, accepting it as normal; it is easy to forget that we do have choice in the matter. His drastic career jump makes the story eve that much more amazing. Moving from law to baking shows that he really had faith, and that we don’t merely have to search within or close to our immediate profession for a more fulfilling career choice. I applaud him and you gt for bringing such brother to light for me.

I’ve seen his show on the Food Network…I think the name is Sugar Rush…It’s great to see a brother who isn’t a rapper or athlete…being celebrated…

This is a great story. Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in what society/the world believes we’re supposed to be, that we get lost in the shuffle.

Thanks for highlighting Mr. Brown – I haven’t seen his show in a while, and he’d fallen off of my radar. I’m going to get his book – I’ve been looking for a strictly cakes cookbook for a while. Great post.

Easy indeed to get caught up in the shuffle. I still do; but less and less as the years go by. I try not to play anyone’s mental mix tapes cept my own.
