Claire Sulmers has been online with the Fashion Bomb since 2006 making her a pioneer of blogger longevitiy. There is no shortage of Fashion coiffeurs; its omnipresent in cyber space and has left no stone unturned; but Claire’s story struck a chord with GT because of her daring move (that most people dream of) of moving to the City of Lights. And if your eyes are glazing on this you’ll know that moving to the laissez faire life of Paris is one of the top ten dream fantasies…read on for inspiration….
Claire. Could you share a day in the life of the fashion bomb? What do you feel makes your blog turned ezine unique in the sea of fashion information that has exploded online?
The Fashion Bomb is always evolving to its readership and the times. For that reason alone there really isn’t a typical day. After four years we are still growing; trying out new themes, subjects, and concepts. What makes us unique is our commitment to our urban demographic, our consistency, and our smart take on all things related to fashion.
What celebrities have you interviewed and what celebs inspire you fashion wise?
I’ve interviewed Kanye West, June Ambrose, Designer Rachel Roy and countless others. Fashion wise I’m inspired by Jennifer Lopez and Chloe Sevigny.
Are there any special plans for the Fashion Bomb this year?
We just had a site relaunch a few weeks ago so we are now the Fashion Bomb Daily! I’d also like to host another Most Fashionable Bomber contest. In general I want the Fashion Bomb to remained focused: celebrity interviews, and perhaps some guest blogspots.
You did something that many people could only dream of doing. You moved to Paris. Tell us about your experience. Has it been everything us dreamers ever imagine it to be?
Moving to Paris was a huge, life changing decision and its been wrought with as many disappointments as moments of elation. Adjusting to everything from culture to the bureaucracy and language has been a challenge. But as Neitzche said “What doesn’t kill you make you stronger.” While all my friends were going to law and medical school, I was kinda chillin in New York and growing roots. I looked to Paris as my own version of Graduate school and sought instead to learn about people and culture.
I already knew French; I was a huge French NERD in high school; and even traveled to Paris for two consecutive summers. After that I was hooked. I minored in French in college and spent a summer in Paris in 2001. So I’ve always known that I wanted to live here for an extended amount of time. Paris is no fairytale, but I’m so happy I came. The city is beautiful, the food is heavenly, and the people (once you figure them out) are charming. I still haven’t accomplished all I want to here, but I can see this leading to other great opportunities. I can’t wait to see what they are.
Who is your fashion muse/fashion inspiration?
As a writer: anyone from Malcolm Gladwell to Robin Givhan to Tom Wolfe. As business woman: Kimora Lee Simmons & Oprah. Style: anyone from Jackie O to Kate Moss.
What designer could dress you everyday?
The one and only Diane Von Furstenberg. Her style is the perfect mix of femininity and sophistication.
What do you splurge and skimp on?
Splurge: shoes, bags, jeans, & makeup. Skimp: White tees and Jewelry.
Get Togetha is all about stylish home decor. What is your ideal pad style?
Lot’s of sunlight and mirrors. I loved my apartment in Brooklyn it had yellow walls which just made everything look sunny all the time.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received and what’s the best you can give?
Received: Quitters never win and Winners never quit. What I can Give: Don’t get discouraged when you hear no. It only takes one yes. So ask as many ways as possible.
And finally if you could have anyone over for dinner alive or dead who would they be and what would you serve?
As cliche as it sounds: Oprah. Grilled Chicken and Veggies. I’m not that much of a cook but I would find something bomb!
