Quote to Live By: Balance is the Key to Life!
Shevon takes the formless and shapes it into form and I really respect the art of shaping and molding cause on so many levels its a metaphor for this thing called life. Discovered Shevon on my Internet trails and not only does she make beautiful objects but I would like her to personally come to my Harlem apartment and cook for me. Shevon was also gracious enough to grant a lucky winner one of her handmade and bee-u-tiful soap dishes. Just drop a comment in the box and make sure your name’s on the mailing list. On to the interview….
Shevon..what’s a typical day in the life of working with your hands….
Most of what I do starts with sketches because working with clay is a process that involves stages. It’s a one thing leads to another type passion. And there’s a lot of planning involved. Everyday in the studio is a balancing act and no one piece can be finished in a day. One pot can take an entire month to create; but then the reward is the beauty that I create.
How long has pottery been your passion?
About 12 years. My first class was as a senior in high school.
Whom or what serves as your inspiration in your work?
I’m inspired by nature: food, plants, organic shapes, colors in nature & patterns.
What everyday object(s) could you not live without?
Mac Computer. Must Have.
GT: I’m with you on that one. After two broken Dell’s I’m a self-professed Mac Snob.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
When craft fairs I tell people that this is my work and then they turn around and ask me if I really made it.
What is your decor style?
Bohemian Chic. For sure.
What objects do you believe are worth the splurge?
Food: Quality olive oil, Fruits and Veggies, and handmade items. I love giving gifts made by hand as opposed to say some factory in China. Whenever I can I support my local artisans: soap, jewelry, cards, knitted items…cause I really value and respect the discipline that goes into making something with your hands.
And in Get Togetha fashion if you could have anyone over for dinner alive or dead who would they be and what would you serve?
Michelle Obama. First Course: Apple Fennel Salad. (Gt: Sick!) Main Course: Braised Chicken with White Wine Sauce served with baked rosemary potatoes and baby carrots. Dessert: a sweet and creamy Carmel Topped Pumpkin Coconut Flan garnished with a dash of cinnamon. Simple and Elegant…just like Mrs. O.

…love that she kept up with pottery after HS. I loved sewing but I let other pursuits over shadow it and it’s almost forgotten now.

This is a very enlightening and inspirational post (as usual- lol) definitely a great metaphor to life…. … ….
“…it starts with a sketch, working with “life” is a process that involves stages. It’s a one thing leads to another type passion. And there’s a lot of planning involved…
“Everyday in the studio is a balancing act, a masterpiece that can’t be finished in one day. And though it takes time to create, the reward is the beauty that created ….. …” (Metaphoric use from quotes above)
